As a mentor for Career Connections in the radio division it’s a phenomenal program. Not only is it a way for me to pick up a little extra money on the side for my job and teach a student what I do for a living. Some radio and television. But also the fun part about watching a student get into the studio, gets to run the equipment, gets to produce the commercials, gets to voice everything. This is the fun part about this Career Connection is it’s not just a curriculum course you get, you read, you send something back. Its hands on, it’s in the studio, and by the time this person gets to the interview process they know what they are doing, they know what’s the business is about. They have got that large picture and they win the interview process and the whole key is to get into the door for the first time and that’s what Career Connection can do for you.

Let’s talk about cost. When you go to college, look at the money you spend and then when you walk out of college and you have a degree after you spend forty, fifty thousand dollars or whatever it is and you walk to me. I have kids coming to me all the time with their degree. I have got a degree in communications and you know what I ask them okay, but what did you do? What have you done? Show me what you have done because what you have done in college is all right but I want to know what you have done in the real world.  Career Connection gets you in the real world immediately.

Some of the things that the students learn are simple things like and this might sound funny, how to breathe. You would be mazed at how many people don’t know how to breathe and I will show you what I mean. When you breathe your stomach should go out because air is filling your diaphragm. You know many people breathe like and everything goes in.  So when they get to the end they are like this and they don’t realize it. Little things like that, how to pronounce, how to read copy before you go on air. People don’t do that. They don’t read the copy and what happens there is a word over here and they get messed up and they have to start over. We cover all these things. We cover the different avenues and aspects of on air broadcasting, of technical broadcasting if that’s what you want. I just think it’s a more complete package. I always have and if I didn’t, I want to say if I didn’t  I would never do this and I also want to say I have turned down students. I have turned down students because I felt this isn’t what they want, they don’t know what they want and teaching some one in that category is tough.
